Week 2 (25th- 29th September 2023)
I am back! This week’s sessions on descriptive writing was
incredibly insightful and thought-provoking. I found several aspects of the
sessions to be particularly interesting and valuable. First and foremost, I
appreciated the comprehensive insight provided during the class. Mrs L did an
excellent job of breaking down the fundamentals of descriptive writing,
explaining how it serves a crucial role in communication. Understanding that
descriptive writing is not just about listing details but about creating vivid
mental images for the reader was an eye-opener. This insight will undoubtedly
improve my writing skills and help me become a more effective communicator.
Furthermore, the discussions around the purpose of
descriptive writing were particularly enlightening. I realized that descriptive
writing is not just about embellishing text with adjectives but about conveying
a deeper meaning or emotion through words. It was fascinating to explore how
different authors use descriptive writing to elicit specific emotional
responses from their readers. This understanding has given me a new perspective
on how to approach descriptive writing in my own work. This reflection made me
realize the universality and versatility of descriptive writing, and I'm now
more motivated to hone my descriptive writing skills in different contexts. Also, exploring the role of descriptive writing in
various professions, such as marketing or journalism, would provide a
well-rounded understanding of its applications.
In conclusion, this week’s sessions on descriptive writing
and its purpose was both enlightening and engaging. It provided comprehensive
insights, deepened my understanding, and encouraged reflective thought. I look
forward to future sessions that continue to explore and refine my critical
writing skills.
Hey there, it's me on your blog. You are so correct, the sessions held by Mrs. Lazarus on descriptive writing was very informative and practical. Also it is very important to know that in writing a descriptive piece one should not only list details but as you rightly said, it's creating vivid mental images for the reader. This also will lead to curiosity allowing students to think critically. Therefore, I found this lesson to be very vital and timely for our assignment. As a teacher I am looking forward to use this strategy and knowledge gained in my writing and to assist my daughter and students. Kia, will you agree that from this lesson your writing has emerge? When new knowledge is gained, improvement should be evident. It was nice stopping by until next time. See ya....
ReplyDeleteIts kai sitting a computer screen away from you. I do agree because i have seen it in my writing it has really grown.. Improvement is definitely evident in my use of L1Thankfor the comment, do come again.
ReplyDeleteHi there, thanks for your blog. I too have gotten insight from Mrs L on what descriptive writing truly entails. I really thought descriptive writing using a wide range of adjectives at the most appropriate time, but I've come to learn as well that it is more than just adjectives but involves the use of expressions, figurative language, adverbs to make your piece come alive to the reader. I remember my mom buying me this beautiful journal and told me that to write down any interesting expressions of vocabulary words that I would have come across from reading, its only now I realised what she was trying to do. By doing this, you would have a bank of interesting expressions that can be used to help create vivid pictures that will help the reader imagine just what is being described. When the reader can truly see, hear, touch or taste exactly what the writer would have described in their piece, you become one with the writer. That is such an amazing experience!
ReplyDeleteHello Kai, I am in full agreement as well. Mrs Lazarus always ensure that we grasp what she teaches us by making the presentation meaningful. I trust that we will all take a page from her book and bring it back to our classrooms. I know you are not in the classroom now, but tell me, was descriptive writing at grade six focused on adjectives only?
ReplyDeleteYour idea of taking a page from her book and bringing it back to your classrooms reflects a wonderful commitment to applying effective teaching methods. Sharing insights and learning experiences can indeed contribute to the improvement of teaching practices across different settings. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteKai great blog. I share your perspective on Descriptive writing. Mrs. L did a marvellous Job in execution. I believe most students enjoy doing a descriptibve piece on their favourite pet, food or their best friend. At the primary level I think we all think that it just entails just adding adjectives to make it more vivid and to paint a clear picture in the reader's mind. As you mentioned in your post it is more than just that. I do hope we can take a page from Mrs. L book and be as explicit with our students when introducing our students to different types of writing in the classroom.

ReplyDeleteInspired by Mrs. L’s effective teaching process, I've adopted her approach, infusing creativity and student engagement into my own instructional methods for a more active and stirring learning experience. Learning from her has empowered me to create an environment where education becomes a shared and exciting journey.
